Antonio Citterio
As an architect and furniture and industrial designer, Antonio Citterio has been attracting attention for decades. He always combines aesthetic devices with his practical approach; in his own words, he says he tries to "find simple answers to reality."
Self-Image as an Architect
Antonio Citterio was born in Meda, Italy in 1950, and although the initial focus of his career was in industrial design, he sees himself primarily as an architect. Alongside the architect Terry Dwan, Citterio worked on the design of buildings in Europe and Japan throughout the 1980s and 1990s. After that, he dedicated himself to interior design and gained international recognition through his work for leading Italian interior design labels. His designs are most often found in living areas, but he also designs for bathrooms and office spaces.
Citterio has already received the renowned Compasso
d'Oro-ADI three times – in 1987, 1994 and 2022. From the timing of the
respective awards, it is clear that Antonio Citterio is not the type of person who rests on his
laurels. With his style, which is characterized by simplicity in form but
sophistication in the details, he creates timelessly elegant and homey results.
Antonio Citterio and Duravit
Antonio Citterio put his design skills to good use in the creation of the Aurena series for Duravit. Choosing the golden ratio as a source of inspiration is a clear reflection of Citterio's background as an architect; this formula is regarded as the epitome of aesthetic harmony in architecture. The result is perfectly balanced proportions that create order while being visually appealing – a prime example of the timeless elegance of his designs. Antonio Citterio clearly expressed his thoughts on bathroom design as follows: "Bathrooms have become personal spaces that convey contentment. They are no longer merely about function, but rather about aesthetic excitement."
